Health workers still face shortage of N95 masks

Frontline workers still face shortages of N95 masks one year into the pandemic.

Companies like Honeywell and 3M have ramped up production of personal protective equipment, but some are saying it's still not enough. About 56 percent of frontline workers say they still don't have enough N95 masks.

Frontline workers have been forced to use the same N95 mask for days, "until the mask either broke or became visually soiled", says Grover Street, a former ICU nurse.

The lack of personal protective equipment has lead health workers to contract COVID-19, or leave the medical profession entirely.

"It's like playing Russian Roulette", says Mr. Street, when caring for patients who are infected with the coronavirus.

As the pandemic soared last year, companies like 3M, and Honeywell have ramped up historic production levels of N95 respirators. Honeywell can now produce well over 1 billion respirators a year, and 3M has quadrupled their N95 mask production, compared to last year.

But, it's still not enough. As of last month there was still a significant shortage of N95 masks and approximately 56% of frontline workers say they still don't have enough N95 masks.

Many hospitals, especially smaller ones, are asking staff to wear the same N95 mask for several shifts. And, there's also an influx of counterfeit N95 masks flooding the market.
